When things go wrong in life, how many times do you feel that the outside world is conspiring against you? Most often, these feelings have legitimate reasons as we face disappointment or anger or frustration. When faced with adverse situation it is often the easy way out to feel victimized, to point the finger at others, to blame circumstances for our situation.
Whilst this behavior can bring relief, the relief is only momentary. Very soon we are back in our grind and the next situation comes up and the whole circle begins again. So what could be way out that will propel us forward instead of taking us for another round of the same?
We, as humans, always have a choice. In every situation, no matter the gravity or intensity, we have a choice. The choice to see ourselves as victims or as learners. To see circumstances as teachers that invite us to learn something from it about ourselves, about human nature. And any new piece of learning an impulse for us to grow. To grow as individuals and as a collective.
The first step you can take is to ask yourself these self-reflective questions, the next time you are faced with challenges:
How can I engage with this situation in a manner that serves me and others?
What is this situation trying to highlight?
Is my perception of the situation true? If yes, ask again. If no, what one small step can I take to change it to further my wellbeing and the wellbeing of others?
What this is situation showing me about myself?
When you ask questions like these, you open yourself up to curiosity. You ask and listen. You remain curious about the answers. And more often than not, the answers will surprise you.
